Wine Tasting in Montepulciano

This lovely ancient hill town built along a limestone ridge is famous for its excellent "Vino Nobile". Ancient legend has it that Montepulciano was founded at the orders of the Etruscan king Porsenna.

Inside its walls, the streets are crammed with the Renaissance-style palazzi and churches. The name of its good local wine "Vino Nobile" seems to derive from its extremely delicate taste, produced mostly by the noble families. This wine is obtained from grapes of Sangiovese wine (Prugnolo, Gentile, and Cannaiolo Nero) with the addition of grapes from other wine varieties of the area.

The departure of this tour for a maximum of 8 participants is at 9:30am from your hotel or villa in Siena and province. The first stop is Pienza, a hill town founded by the pope Pius II. There is a stunning view of the Orcia valley from this medieval path and you’ll enjoy a walk through the small streets full of shops carrying many local products, including the delicious Pecorino cheese.

Lunch is served in a typical Tuscan restaurant where together with some wonderful Tuscan dishes; you will also taste the virgin olive oil of the area.

The next stop is Montefollonico, a little fortified village with small houses. An ancient winery will be visited here where the owner with passion and devotion makes a very good Nobile of Montepulciano. You will visit the XIII century cellar and have a private wine tasting learning about the old traditional way of making this interesting wine. From the terrace of the winery you can admire stupendous views of the surrounding landscape.

From here you will go to another small winery where a great Nobile of Montepulciano and a Supertuscan wine are produced. You will visit the cellar and have a wine tasting here before heading back to your hotel or villa at around 5:30pm.
